FAQs for Perigo Experts

Who are Perigo Experts?

Is there a place in the world you are an Expert on? Like the geology of a national park? Or the emergence of a musical genre in an inner city neighborhood? Or the architecture of historic homes in a city? Or the history of abandoned buildings in your village?

Perigo’s mission is to help people travel intelligently. Visiting a new place should be more than mere sightseeing — it should be a journey into its soul. That means uncovering the stories that aren’t in guidebooks or on the Internet — the ones held by Experts - locals, subject matter authorities, and those who’ve lived it.

Perigo makes it easy and fun for Experts to share what you know. Just walk, ride, drive, float . . . and talk — recording your insights as you move through the place you know best. Every word you speak is geo-stamped. After it’s uploaded, Perigo’s AI + human content editors handle the rest: verifying, enhancing, and transforming your words into rich, location-aware audio that plays for Perigo listeners exactly where it matters most.

Perigo’s Smart Docs enables Experts to edit and augment the content from the comfort of their computer, making sure it is always updated with the latest information.

The experience for travellers is further enhanced with dynamically updated local news, crime reports and weather alerts. It also magically overlaps with Interests entered by the listener on the Perigo app.

And when people listen, Experts earn. Perigo shares about 15-25% (depending upon the depth of contributions and the number of contributors) of the revenue generated by those journeys with Expert contributors — giving you lasting income, visibility, and recognition as an expert voice of your region.

Your knowledge deserves to be heard. Let it live on, right where it belongs.

Who can be a Perigo Expert?

Anyone with deep knowledge about a place.

If you know something meaningful, unique, or hidden about a specific location, you can be a Perigo Expert.

This includes:

Locals who know the backstreets, legends, and lesser-known history of their town.

Subject matter experts in fields like geology, architecture, ecology, history, arts, music, or culture.

Park rangers, naturalists, researchers, and anyone who has studied a place closely.

Artists, activists, or residents with lived experience or cultural insight into a neighborhood.

Storytellers who can bring places to life through real or personal narratives.

If you can help someone see, understand, or feel something they would’ve otherwise missed — you’re probably a good fit to be a Perigo Expert.

Perigo is building a global network of local experts — and you could be next.

How to Create a Perigo Guide

- Download the Perigo app and sign up/in. Please allow location and audio access when prompted.

- The home screen will start to play stories about what’s around you. Go to the Create a Guide section (fourth tab with a mic icon).

- Tap ‘Create a Guide’. Enter a name for your Guide.

- Press Record and speak into the phone (or a headphones, or mic connected to your phone) as clearly as possible about what’s around you as you move - on foot, bike, car or boat.

You can make multiple recordings within a Guide.

NOTE: We recommend that you make a test recording following all these instructions, before making real recordings to ensure it all works well on your device.

- Start a Section (bottom left flag icon) when you enter an area or reach a spot with a unique context, explanation or narrative. E.g., a view point or geologically unique area on a hike, a gallery in a museum, a shop in a busy shopping area, and so on.

You’ll need to give it a name - typically something that represents what the Section is about.

You can have as many Sections open at any time as you want. For example, let’s say the whole Guide is about a hike through a valley: You can start a Section when you are about to get on a bridge, and a sub-Section could be a part of the bridge with a special view and so on. At the end of the view, close the sub-Section, and when you leave the bridge, close the Section about the bridge.

You can have as many Sections per recording as you want.

- Be sure to end a Section when you are done from that area by simply tapping the End button.

To rename or remove a Section, tap the Section card, and tap Remove.

- If there is something visually interesting that you are talking about, take a picture by pressing the camera button on the bottom right. Accept the prompt to allow Perigo to have camera access.

- You can pause a recording for any reason by pressing the pause button. Restart by pressing the Record button again.

- End the Recording by pressing the Stop button. Give the recording a name that represents what it is about.

- The recording will start to upload immediately after you press Stop, if there is an internet connection. It will move to the ‘Uploaded’ tab and will be playable after it has completed processing, and will be erased from your device.

If there is no internet connection, the recording will stay on your device. When connection is available, open the app, and the recording will automatically be uploaded, and then removed from your device.

If the app is uninstalled or if the app’s data/cache is cleared, recordings will be lost.

You can review and edit your Guides by logging into www.perigo.app using the same credentials you used on the app. More on that in the next item.

Peridocs: Perigo Smart Documents

The Perigo Smart Document, also called a Peridoc, is a powerful, AI-enhanced web-based text editor that lets Guide Creators refine and enhance their spoken recordings after transcription. Think of it as a smart, location-aware word processor: every word is geotagged, so you can see exactly where it was said and adjust or expand it accordingly.

- When you first get to your Guides' Peridoc, the recording would have already been transcribed and copy edited. You can view previous versions by going the versions menu.

- Select any text and right click to view an AI-powered research menu that automatically matches the style of the content generated to the style of the rest of the document. Copy and paste the content into the section for further editing.

- You can edit the geofence of any section. Click on the edit icon on the top right corner of the map, and then adjust the polygon of the geofence, and click Save.

- You can add a Section and enter title and text for it. You can then create a geofence by drawing a polygon on the map.

- Add a description of your Guide. This will appear on the Guide's page on the Perigo site and the app.

- Use the tools to generate images for the Guide. You can pull creative commons images from the Web, generate an image using AI, or upload your own. Click on a generated image to edit further or add text and more.

- After the description has been added, go to the audio trailer section to generate text for the trailer, edit it and generate an audio file for it.

- You can enter names of collaborators who helped you create the Guide

- After you complete a Guide, go to the Publish menu and Submit the Guide for approval by Perigo.

- After a Guide goes live, it is translated into over 55 languages, and made live on the Perigo site and app.

- Creators can and should come back to Peridocs to edit the content they recorded, add depth, correct errors, or incorporate new findings over time. It’s an evolving, intelligent workspace to build high-quality, location-based knowledge for Perigo users.

Peridocs are constantly evolving. Please reach out to us for any assistance with Peridocs.

Recording tips

Speak clearly, confidently and naturally, like you’re talking to a curious traveler, or a friend who’s right alongside you.

Creating Sections is important - it provides layers of context, and creates natural breaks in the content that Perigo AI learns from.

It is advisable to have a general plan, and gather your thoughts, before starting a final recording.

If you make a mistake, or hesitate, encounter noisy areas, or face other distractions during an otherwise good recording, don’t worry and just keep going - Perigo’s AI is good at detecting and eliminating them. If they still come in, you can edit them out in the Peridoc. There is no need to reject an otherwise great recording because of a few snafus.

Try and stay consistent in tone, volume, language and style.

It is ok to take pauses - silence while the recording is in progress won’t have a detrimental effect on the output. For anticipated pauses, you can press Pause.

You can record indoors or outdoors - as long as there is a GPS connection to your device.

Multiple recordings

You can create multiple recordings for the Guide to one place. Perigo AI will stitch them together when it contextually makes sense. For example, for a Guide for a very long hike or a large museum, you can do multiple recordings over different periods of time.

You can also create multiple entries across different locations, as long as you are an Expert in each of those areas.

Perigo is designed for layered, place-based storytelling. This means there can be multiple Experts contributing knowledge about one location - same or various aspects related to the same area. For example, a geologist and a biologist can make separate recordings for the same hike. Perigo AI blends the content together to provide travelers a singular experience, while maintaining attribution for each Expert.

In many situations, the listener is able to choose subjects they are interested in, customizing the narration to those. E.g. the listener can choose whether they are interested in the geology and/or biology of a hike.

Perigo’s AI automatically determines the proportion in which the content was streamed, and splits the attribution and earnings accordingly.

Going live

After you make your submission on the Smart Document, there will be one final review by Perigo before the Guide is made available on the Perigo app for travelers.

At that time, Perigo will determine the price that’ll be charged for listeners to access the Guide. Some Guides may be set to be free and maybe ad supported.

A page will be created on the Perigo website with details about the Guide, including an audio trailer for listeners to get a preview. Experts are highly encouraged to share the link to that Guide on social media and with friends and family, to build awareness and increase their earning potential.

Experts also get a referral code and link they can use to promote their Guide - and earn extra income when it results in purchases of the Guide.

Perigo will share the Guide using all its channels and partnerships as well.

Ongoing enhancements to your Guides

You can edit/augment your Guides anytime. There are 2 ways you can do that:

- Make a new recording: Walk/bike/drive and record new content. It will be merged into existing content on the Smart Document, which you can then edit.

- Edit/augment the Smart Document: You can also go straight to the Smart Document and make edits there. When you submit, it will be reviewed by Perigo before being made live on the app.

What languages can Guides be recorded in?

Guides can be recorded in any combination of the following languages:

Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese (Mandarin, Simplified), Chinese (Mandarin, Traditional), Chinese(Cantonese, Traditional), Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, Flemish, French,German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian,Malay, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Thai,Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese.

After they are approved, Guides are translated into over 55 languages for travelers from all over the world to enjoy.

What’s best to make contributions about?

Perigo’s mission is to provide the sound track for what people see through their eyes.

The best Expert knowledge contribution for Perigo is one that fits the above mission - it describes, and educates the traveler about whatever it is that they are looking at. Within that guideline, Experts are encouraged to provide as much depth as they can, within their domains, such as geology, history, culture, art, science and more.

Perigo is also great for specific location based tips that travelers would otherwise not even know to ask in time. Examples: Suggestions to fill gas on a road because there’s no gas station for 50 miles; not to park in a certain neighborhood because of high car theft rates, last spot to get water on a hike, and so on.

What kind of content is NOT accepted?

Perigo’s focus is on factual, educational knowledge that enhances travel or understanding of place. Perigo does not accept personal opinions, political rants, reviews, or promotional content.

Personal stories or opinions are accepted only if they are part of a broader, factual narrative (e.g., verified oral histories). Otherwise, we ask that Experts avoid subjective content.

What’s the review process like?

Experts have to fill out a profile that includes explaining what makes them an expert for a particular area or areas. While any one can record, only approved Experts’ recordings are further processed.

All submissions go through a rigorous verification, fact checking and enhancement process before going live. Our AI helps standardize, tag, and edit for clarity.

How is Expert content attributed?

You’ll be credited as the Expert for the content you record and is played by listeners. Your profile will be linked for users to explore more of your contributions.

For external content that you bring in via the Perigo Smart Document, we encourage you to attribute the source as appropriate.

Can recordings be made while driving or on a boat?

Yes. Perigo Experts can record their knowledge while driving (or on a watercraft) — providing context about scenic drives, historic routes, geological features, local plant and animal life, agricultural insights, cityscapes, architectural notes, culturally important neighborhoods, factories, crime scenes, movie locations, views, or other landmarks along the way.

Just speak naturally while using a hands-free setup, and Perigo will take care of the rest — from geotagging every word to turning it into a polished narrative.

Same applies to recordings made on a watercraft.

Safety comes first. We recommend using a hands-free setup with your phone securely mounted and high-quality noise cancelling headphones. Avoid distractions, and never operate your device manually while the vehicle is in motion. Your safety and the safety of others should always be top priority.

Can recordings be made while biking?

Many travelers on bikes pass through incredible landscapes and towns, often wondering, “What’s the story behind that trail?” or “Is this route historically important?” Whether it’s an old railway line turned into a bike path, a battlefield tucked behind a grove, or hidden landmarks along rural roads — much of that knowledge is lost unless someone local or in-the-know shares it.

Yes, you can record while biking. In fact, cycling routes often make for some of the most engaging Perigo content. If you know the backstory of a path, natural feature, or town along your ride, just narrate as you move.

To make your recordings clear and effective:

Use a helmet or collar mic (wind-resistant) for better audio quality.

Keep your phone securely mounted or in a pocket using Bluetooth controls.

Speak steadily, ideally when coasting or in quiet areas.

Minimize wind and background noise by shielding your mic or choosing less windy moments.

Safety tip: Stay aware of your surroundings and focus on riding safely. Record only when it’s safe to do so — for example, on familiar paths, during slower segments, or while taking a break.

Recommended equipment for making effective recordings

You don’t need professional gear to get started as an Expert - just what’s probably already in your pocket: a smartphone (iOS or Android) and a pair of good quality headphones, ideally with noise cancelling (like Airpods).

Recommended OS versions:

iOS: 15 or above.

Android:

It is critical to do a test recording, as described in the instructions above.

To enhance your experience of being a contributor, as well as improve the quality of the recordings, we recommend getting a smartphone body harness - there are many different models available online. This will enable you to walk and talk handfree, while making it easier to take good pictures.

Expert earnings

Perigo shares 55% of revenue generated from travelers with the Experts who contributed the content delivered by Perigo.

This revenue share arrangement is similar to other creator content platform such as YouTube.

If multiple Experts contribute to a Guide, the revenue share will be split between them commensurate with the percentage of content shared by each.

Revenue is generated via ads on Guides and paid Guides.

The revenue split is calculated from net revenue - after the commission taken by mobile app stores - Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Earnings grow over time as more people listen.

Unlike other marketplace types like home sharing, car sharing, content

Revenue comes from ad-free Guides that Travelers pay for, and from ads that play on free Guides.

Payouts happen on the first business day of every month via bank transfer to the account you set up in your Perigo Expert settings.

You will be able to log into your Perigo account and get live reports on listens, earnings, automatic payouts and so on.

The level of your earnings depends on how many users encounter and engage with your content. Some places and topics are more frequently visited, but even niche contributions can build steady passive income.

We encourage you to share your content on Perigo as far and wide as you can to increase your earnings.
